DIY Faux Clay Vase

Level of difficulty:  Beginner

The pottery texture on this vase looks so real that you’d never know an inexpensive glass container is underneath! Create this gorgeous DIY vase using a few simple supplies.

What You'll Need:

  • Glass Container
  • Baking Soda
  • Crafter’s Closet White Acrylic Paint
  • Crafter’s Closet Black Acrylic Paint
  • Crafter’s Closet Premium Paint Brush
  • Crafter’s Closet Palette
  • Crafter’s Closet Precision Scissors
  • Bowl and Spoon
  • Sand Paper
  • Sponge

Let's Do This!

Step 1:

  1. Mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda with 2 tablespoons of white paint. Note: If you need more, keep the ratio 1:1. The consistency should be like smooth peanut butter.
  2. Brush the mixture on a clean glass vase. The heavier the application, the better. Don’t worry about keeping it smooth. Let dry.
  3. Add a second coat of the mixture. Brush it on in random directions. Again, don’t worry about keeping it smooth. Let dry.
  4. Sand the vase until you get the texture you desire.

Step 2:

  1. Mix white paint with a small dot of black paint to make a medium gray color.
  2. Paint the vase using random, loose brush strokes. Let dry.

Step 3:

  1. Dip a paint brush into black paint and then into water. Randomly tap the brush around the vase to blend the paint. Work small sections at a time. Let dry.

Step 4:

  1. Cut a small piece off of a sponge. Note: A small piece of sponge is easier to handle than the whole thing.
  2. Dip the piece of sponge into white paint and randomly dab it on the vase. Let dry.
